Canon World

Dante's world is broken up into two planes of existence the Human World, or Earth, and the Demon World. It's uncertain whether this Earth is the same one as ours as many of the locations are fictional and not relative to commonly known locations. Dante's world has many of the same modern conveniences of our own world while having a renaissance/european village style feel to it. Furthermore there are Hell Gates present in various locations allowing demons to pass through, lesser demons tend to travel further away from these hell gates, creating trouble for humans, while powerful demons tend to set up territories closer to these gates. Most of these gates are artificial save for the true hell gate created by devil worshippers. This gate is the true entry point into the demon world and was sealed by a demon who woke up to justice, the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, Dante's father.

The Demon World is a remnant of the darkness that originally covered the universe before light blotted it out. The demon world exists alongside the human world on a separate plane of existence and is the home of natural demons, like Sparda, with extraordinary and monstrous abilities. Much like the Fade of Dragon Age, the Demon World does not follow the natural laws of Earth, it shifts and changes. The Demon World is typically ruled by the most powerful demon at the time and also operates as a kind of Hell for humans who have engaged in evil activities in their lifetime.

Canon History

Detailed history.

⦁ Dante was born in Red Grave City, the son of Sparda and Eva and twin brother to Vergil.

⦁ At some point in their early childhood Sparda would disappear and later died to unknown circumstances. On their 8th birthday Eva gave her sons half of the Perfect Amulet, the key to the demon world.

⦁ Dante's home would later be attacked by Demons Resulting in Eva’s death and Dante believing Virgil to be dead.

⦁ Dante became a mercenary and during this period in his life he befriended Nell Goldstein who would create the handguns Ebony and Ivory for him.

⦁ Vergil would reappear in Dante's life to take his amulet.

⦁ Thus begins the events of DMC 3. Dante stops Vergil and Arkham from opening a portal to the demon world, but in the process loses his brother who opts to stay in the demon world.

⦁ Dante's shop is christened Devil May Cry.

⦁ Years later the events in DMC 1 occur. Dante meets Trish, a woman who resembles his mother, who comes to him telling Dante she needs his help to stop Mundus, emperor of the demon world, from opening the gate to the demon world.

⦁ Dante goes to Mallet Island where he ends up fighting his brother under control of Mundus. He also fights and defeats Mundus.

⦁ Dante and Trish team up and rename his shop into Devils Never Cry, a name that doesn't stick as seen in the animated series which is basically just DMC: A Slice of Life.

⦁ In between DMC and DMC2 are a series of Drama CDs and a novel. Basically the adventures of Dante that go into details as to why Dante is perpetually in debt, more demon slaying, and dangerous demon relics.

⦁ The events of DMC 2, loved by few, basically a new demon king takes over and Dante kicks more ass.

⦁ In DMC 4 Dante learns learns about a Sparda cult infiltrated with Demons who want to create a bunch of artificial Hell Gates that would allow more demons in the human world. Dante predictably kicks some more ass and discovers that he has a nephew.

⦁ In DMC 5 Dante's broke ass is hired by the mysterious V who needs Dante to destroy a giant, blood sucking demon tree and kill the new Demon King, Urizen. Urizen turns out to be Vergil, but V also turns out to be Vergil.

⦁ Dante gets his ass kicked by Urizen, ends up in a coma, wakes up a month later to slap the cheeks, learn some dance moves, save his friends who have been absorbed by demons, and continue his never-ending rivalry with Vergil after V and Urizen unite again.

⦁ The day is saved by Nero, a father and son reunion happens, Vergil and Dante go to the Demon World together to do some weed whacking as a cooperative duo. Cooperation lasts about two seconds then back to the regularly scheduled program.

Personality

⦁ Devil May Care

Owing to the fact that his demon heritage grants him abilities that not only make him heartier, but allow him to recover from most injuries, Dante has fostered a degree of recklessness that borders on arrogance. When Dante enters into a battle he rarely enters with thoughts of his own safety in mind, but with the thrill of the battle or the safety of others taking precedence. He frequently makes light of the threats most enemies pose to his safety, often playing with them or putting himself in harm's way deliberately just for cheap, boyish thrills.

Aside from his disregard for his own safety and overconfidence, Dante’s devil may care outlook manifests in his frivolous disregard.

His cheeky, irreverent, and carefree attitude lends his character a great deal of charm, he can ebb and flow in most any situation, but the downside to that is a shirking of many of his adult obligations. His business often suffers from an inability to pay the bills leaving him with no power and no running water from time to time. His carefree attitude also leads him to neglect advice from others, yank the chains of anything within a 10 foot radius, and overestimate his own capacity in a given situation. On the positive side embarrassment is for rookies and Dante is not afraid to lay on the full force of his personality because he has zero fucks to give.

⦁ Compassionate

Underneath his flippant, dismissive, and carefree attitude is someone who genuinely cares about those around him and the consequences of his actions. Over and over again he accepts his brother, even the worst aspects of him, despite having to stop him. We learn through supplemental material that the reason why Dante is perpetually broke all the time is that he’s constantly taking responsibility for the things that happen around him. He pays for any collateral damage he causes, he pays Enzo (who appears to be extorting Dante) because he cut his friend’s arm off to save him, and he continues to support the daughters of his deceased partner Grue.

⦁ Antagonistic

Dante is unironically antagonistic. With people he likes or cares for it typically manifests in playful banter and needling, with his enemies he goading and trying to piss them off. Part of it is just for the fun of it and part of it is strategy, riling up his enemies gives him the advantage of having a calmer head. If he thinks he can get a rise out of an enemy he has no problem mocking, degrading, dismissing, and waving himself around like a tempting piece of meat until they take the bait.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Powers

Supernatural Strength
-Dante's physical strength within his universe allows him to do things like punch through stone, overpower demons that are larger than him like the demon creation Savior, knocking the demon Chaos back with a flick of his finger. His physical strength also enables him to tear down Hell Gates which are supposed to be stronger than steel and take down an artificial demon the size of a skyscraper. He's also blocked punches from Savior who weighs tens of thousands of tons, he threw Nero at a wall with no effort, and has been able to knock back fireballs from demonic dragons. Dante's physical lifting strength is several thousand tons, but there's never been an exact number to measure how strong he is.

Supernatural Speed
-This we actually have some degree of measurement for. Dante is able to block the lightening-based attacks of other Demons indicating that he is as fast or faster than the speed of lightening. His speed gives him the leverage to jump at incredible heights, dodge, and strike with accuracy. He's able to catch bullets with his teeth, shoot bullets out of the air, and split bullets in half while in a midair jump.

Supernatural Agility
-Dante's agility and dexterity allow for impossible aerial acrobatics and weapons accuracy. Dante's parkour skills are second to none allowing to maneuver on terrain that's not stable or jump along crumbling, flying debris. He has incredible balance and he's able to land a jump on an incredibly small target like the spire of a tall building. When Lady launched a rocket at him, he was able to jump on the rocket and redirect it by riding on it. His dexterity enables him to shoot small targets accurately and successively. Such as with Agnus he shot the man's research documents and then he shot Agnus himself through the hole he'd made in his research documents. When fighting Savior in order to pierce his armor Dante threw Vergil's sword, the Yamato, at Savior, then fired several bullets in a line so that they stacked one behind the other giving each bullet enough force to plunge the Yamato into Savior.

Supernatural Stamina
-Dante has a great deal of staying power, able to sustain injuries and still move great distances or make smart ass remarks. Even when he's impaled by a sword Dante is able to pull the blade out and go on with his day, slowing down very little in the process. Traveling great distances on foot doesn't seem to wear him out and he doesn't require sustenance in the interim. His Stamina even extends to his ability to breathe, apparently, he doesn't need to breathe underwater or in the vacuum of space.

Supernatural Durability
-While Dante's skin can be pierced by weapons and bullets, he's been shown to sustain high levels of trauma such as being punched by Beowulf, shot in the head, or stabbed through the chest. He's been thrown into walls and off of high altitudes and survived. He was able to sit on the flaming tail of Berial the Conqueror without so much as getting burned, took multiple punches to the face by Nero without suffering any damage, and barely suffered under the crushing weight of Beowulf's brute strength. The only time he hasn't gotten back up immediately was when Urizen knocked him clear off of the Qliphoth, he survived it, but the impact and the fall itself put him into a month-long coma.

Supernatural Senses
-This is also another minor one, but Dante has shown that he can sense attacks from miles off and he's been able to smell the presence of his enemies even when they cannot be seen. An example would be with the toad-like demons Bael and Dagon, who act very much like angler fish, luring their prey with shiny attractive objects while hiding in a storm. They were able to hide their physical presence from Dante, but he could smell their distinct body odor.

Accelerated Healing
-Dante's regenerative abilities allow him to recover from nearly any wound allowing him to heal almost instantly. Even wounds that should prove fatal lake being stabbed through he chest or a band of hell prides simultaneously running him through with scythes, even Lady shooting him in the head was a minor annoyance and he healed from it.

Demonic Power Mainipulation
-Dante's demonic power manipulation is this nebulous, limitless ability that includes, but is not limited to using his own demonic energy to charge weapons like Ebony and Ivory or even the air around him. Examples of him using his demonic energy to imbue things with demonic energy include allowing a motorcycle to coast vertically along a wall, charging a canon to blast energy at Savior, and giving his bullets the ability to take down entire structures. He has the ability to seal demons away, including immensely powerful demons like Mundus. He has the ability to absorb the power and abilities of other demons, especially those that he defeats, and he can fashion them into relics called Devil Arms.

Telekinesis
-The only example we've seen of this is Dante stopping Trish's motorcycle from hitting him in midair so he could blast it right back at her with Ebony and Ivory so while it seems to be an ability that he possesses there's not enough substantial instances of him using this ability that give it much in the way of utility. It's also overshadowed by later abilities that allow him to control time.

Styles
-Styles can be looked at like specializations in Dragon Age and Dante has access to seven types of styles. They are basically fighting styles that Dante switch between.

□ Royal Guard is a style that focuses on minimizing the damage that Dante takes and has four substyle abilities that go along with it.
-Just Block negates any damage taken.
-Release is a counterattack that reverses damage taken by an enemy and turns it back on the enemy.
-Ultimate blocks attacks but can use the energy from blocked attacks to fuel Dante's health regeneration.
-Dreadnaught can transform Dante's body into an impenetrable shell that is impervious to attack.

□ Gunslinger: What it says on the tin. Gunslinger is a style that maximizes the damage delivered by Ebony and Ivory.
□ Swordmaster: Similarly Swordmaster increases the amount of damage Dante is able to deliver with any close range weapon.
□ Trickster is a style that focuses on dodging and the ability to maneuver around a battle field and comes with three substyles.
-Air Trick allows Dante to teleport towards an enemy for a close range strike.
-Sky Star is very similar to air hike that gives Dante a platform he's able to kick off from pushing him forward horizontally.
-Flipper allows Dante to flip back into a safe zone when an enemy knocks him off of his feet.

□ Doppelganger allows Dante to make a copy of himself in battle.
□ Quicksilver allows Dante to slow down time around him temporarily.
□ Darkslayer makes his fighting style similar to Vergil's fighting style and it is a style he relies upon the least for this reason.

Devil Arms are weapons that are essentially manifestations of a deceased or a defeated demon's powers and possess varying degrees of sentience depending on whether or not the demon was defeated and opted to become a Devil Arm or whether the demon is dead. The only Devil Arm that Dante will have access to is the Devil Sword Sparda and apart from being a manifestation of Sparda's power, concealing Dante's presence from other demons, and changing its shape, the Devil Sword Sparda has no sentience about it. It cannot speak to him the way other Devil Arms throughout the series have been able to.
-Devil Sword Sparda: Combos and dueling abilities that Dante can perform aside, the Devil Sword Sparda has select abilities that come with it. Due to it's almost organic looking shape (in previous games it used to look more mechanical) its parts can move and be reformed to take the shape of a scythe or a spear. It can also enable the use of the ability Air Hike, a double jump created by a temporary platform.

Devil Trigger
-Stats buffer: speed, strength, stamina and durability get a boost while he's in this form.
-Access to demonic abilities: Demons have abilities that are broken up into three elemental classes lightening, fire, and ice. In his Devil Trigger form Dante has access to each of these demonic abilities. He is also able to slow down time in this form as well giving him something similar to the quicksilver ability.
-Regeneration: his regenerative abilities improve as well and he's able to recover a lot faster from injuries.
-Shapeshifting: he takes on a more demonic form.
-Limited flight: Dante does have wings, but his ability to actually fly in this form is limited to hovering and gliding.

Abilities

⦁ Skilled hand-to-hand combat
⦁ Weapons proficiency
⦁ Swordsmanship
⦁ Marksmanship
⦁ Intelligent with regards to his analytical abilities
⦁ Musical aptitude

Weaknesses
⦁ Dante's weakness has less to do with physical weakness and more to do with emotional fragility. Dante will not hurt non-demons in any way, shape, or form even if he's betrayed. Dante prefers to operate alone; it takes a lot for someone to prove they can handle themselves on their own to the extent that he can trust them in battle. He's lost people around him before and he'd rather not take the risk and he would put himself at risk or the wellbeing of others.

Nerfs

No Demonic Power Manipulation
No Telekenesis
No Styles

STRENGTH: Dante's physical strength is limited to extent of what a man of his size, weight class, and muscle-mass is capable of doing, but magical energy enables him to reach peak human capabilities. Essentially his overhead lifting ability would be around 500lbs, his deadlifting limit would be around 1,000lbs, and his leg-press capacity would be around 2,200lbs. This peak human condition comes with a few caveats, this first caveat is that it is exhaustible and requires Dante take breaks. The second caveat is that this magical energy that fuels this peak human strength can be disrupted by anything that can disrupt or interfere with magic such as any kind of dispel abilities or magebane abilities. It would allow him to go toe-to-toe with qunari and engage in successive battles until he's exhausted the ability or something interferes with it. This ability will definitely be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Speed: Dante has the average sprinting speed of an athlete at around 15mph and 8mph at a distance.
Agility: Dante's agility falls within the range of what the normal person with the appropriate training would be able to achieve. Instead of gravity defying acrobatics he's able to move in the way an individual who has trained in competitive parkour can move. His handiness and dexterity with weaponry will still be accurate and precise, but requires concentrated effort. He won't be able to shoot or slap a target out of the air while in mid flip money for jam.
Stamina: Unlike his Devil Trigger form Dante will have more staying power, Dante would be able to cover a lot of ground over the course of a day, but he would be subject to the rules of three. He wouldn't be able to go more than three minutes without air, three days without water, or three weeks without food. He is limited by the requirements of the human body and if he's injured his endurace would be compromised.
Senses: While Dante would normally be able to smell his enemies and sense an attack from a mile off, this ability will be reduced to complex spatial awareness that a warrior would have and the general ability to intuit someone's fighting intent to a reasonable extent.
Durability/Healing: What Dante is able to heal from is directly related to the amount of damage he can take so these two attributes work in tandem with one another. Dante will not be able to heal severe wounds or reattach severed limbs. His healing capacity can be exhausted so one small wound would heal fine, but consecutive small wounds would take longer to heal or would stop healing completely until he's had the time to rest. He can recover from one would-be-fatal wound per day. If he receives enough injuries in a short amount of time he would succumb to death. He is not immune to the blight or red lyrium.

Devil Arms: Dante's sword will have the ability to transform into a spear and while he is using his Devil Trigger the weapon will be imbued with lightening, fire, and ice attributes similar to the effects that runes have on weapons.

Devil Trigger: While Dante might be flippant about the use of his Devil Trigger he will learn quickly enough about the fears and taboos placed on the concept of demons in Thedas. This is not something he'll use routinely in front of anyone, it's not something he uses a great deal normally, only when he's taking a fight seriously. This will be his ace up his sleeve and he'll feel people out first before sharing this information. Odds are this ability will be reserved for fighting other demons or darkspawn or reserved for desperate situations.
- Strength: Dante's physical strength is doubled that of his granted peak physical strength while he's in this state.
- Speed: Dante will be able to move at Fade Step levels of speed and at the distance Fade Step permits.
- Wings: Dante's Devil Trigger form does possess wings and while he will not be able to fly, they will enable him to glide/hover.
- Stamina: Dante's Devil Trigger will have a similar effect on him as the Power of Blood ability in Dragon Age Origins, while it gives him a boost in power it comes at the cost of his own personal health. So, his staying power in this form will be incredibly limited and he will only be able to use it for approximately about a minute at a time with an extended recovery period between each use. He would need the time to heal himself or he would need healing after the fact.

Humanization

Dante is half-demon, but aside from this Dante looks perfectly human.

Fit

Dante is a demon hunter with a business that specializes in dealing with Demons so he'll be down for beating some demon ass and mowing down darkspawn. Don't know if they'll sense he's also demonic on some level or how that will play out, but he'll definitely be comfortable with that aspect of being in Thedas.

On the other hand, Dante will have a complex when it comes to killing humans/humanoid beings, he'll either pass on missions that involve that kind of confrontation or he will disarm rather than kill. It'll be interesting to explore that aspect of his humanity complex.
